Among the works which Bede composed specifically as aids to the interpretation of Scripture is the Liber de schematibus et tropis<\/em>, a small book on the figures of speech with which the Scriptures are adorned. He appended this short treatise to the De arte metrica<\/em>, a handbook of quantitative and rhythmical poetry, dedicating them both to his pupil Cuthbert. An earlier view assigned these grammatical works to the beginnings of Bede’s career as a scholar and teacher, justifying to a large degree their reputation as immature and derivative school books, unworthy of comparison with Bede’s historical and exegetical works. Bede’s only other grammatical composition, the De orthographia<\/em>, suffered from a similar reputation. It also was considered insignificant and relegated to Bede’s juvenilia, until Carlotta Dionisotti illustrated its sophistication, and pointed out the internal evidence that suggested its dating to post-709.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nCarmela Vircillo Franklin.
